What to do if you weigh a partial item during an inventory, and the amount the WISK app displays appears incorrect

Introduction

Sometimes when weighing an item, you may notice that the amount the WISK app displays doesn’t match the amount remaining in the item.

For example, you either place:

  • a near-full item on the scale, and the app says only 0.5 of it remains or

  • an item on the scale and it says it exceeds the full item weight

To fix the issue, take the following steps:

  1. Make sure the scale is on a flat and level surface and has been zeroed / tared

  2. Make sure the size of the item you’re weighing is the same as the item called up in the app (for example, you may have a 750ml bottle pulled up, but are weighing a 1L bottle or vice versa)

  3. Verify that the weights on file for the item are correct, and add a new weight if necessary

  4. Check the item category / add an empty weight

For each step, you’ll see a detailed explanation below.

Check Scale

Whenever you’re using the scale, follow these best practices:

  1. Place the scale on a flat and level surface

  2. Have all four feet of the scale touching the surface

  3. Zero the scale (press the tare button if it displays anything other than 0g if nothing is on the scale)

If the scale is not placed properly, it can display an incorrect weight that can be off by a few hundred grams.

Reposition the scale, and try weighing the item again. If it is still incorrect, move to the next step.

Item Exceeds Full Item Weight

If you place an item on the scale and its weight exceeds the full item weight on file, you'll see this message in the app:

"The value on the scale is greater than the full weight on file for this item. Please check that you are weighing the correct item or edit the item weight. If the item is full / unopened, count it using full units."

Follow those steps and also make sure that your scale is positioned correctly as outlined in Check Scale, and then tap "Weigh again" to get an updated reading.

Negative Weight Value - Perfect Blend Smart Scales

If using a Perfect Blend Smart Scale (Pro or 2.0) and you see a negative weight value in the WISK Mobile App, press the "Tare" button in the app to reset it.

Note: The "Tare" button is only visible when a Perfect Blend Smart Scale is connected to your iOS device.

If the scale displays a very large negative weight value, and the "Tare" button doesn't fix the issue, try resetting the scale's Bluetooth connection.

Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the scale for 4 seconds. This disconnects the scale from your device and it should reconnect automatically. The negative value displaying in the app should reset.

If resetting the Bluetooth connection still doesn't work, try these steps:

  1. Close the WISK Mobile app (double-tap the home button and swipe the WISK app upward)

  2. Remove the batteries from the compartment on the back of the scale and then put them back in

  3. Restart the WISK Mobile app and make sure nothing is on the scale

  4. Check the reading on the scale

If the issue persists, please reach out in the chat, or message [email protected].

Scanned the Wrong Item

Pay close attention to the volume of the item that is called up in the app.

For example, if you have a 1.14L bottle of Jameson called up in the app, and you have placed a 750ml bottle on the scale, you won’t get an accurate measurement because they have different full weights.

This is most likely to occur when using the “List view” while taking inventory since you aren’t scanning the physical item. Always verify the volume of the item that displays when entering your counts.

Note: If you’ve scanned the item, and the volume that pulls up in the app is different from the physical item, you can edit the item information. Learn more here:

If the volume in the app matches the physical item, but it is still displaying the wrong amount, move to the next step.

Wrong Item Weight

For each item, there is a full and empty weight field. For the majority of items, WISK is able to take the full weight, and compare that to the density of the alcohol type (based on category: rum, vodka, etc) to calculate how much remains in the item.

If there is an empty weight on file for the item, it ignores the density rating, and calculates what is left based on the full and empty weights.

If either the full or empty weight (if there is one on file) is inaccurate, it won’t display the correct amount remaining in the bottle.

Full Weights

It’s possible the full weight of an item may be incorrect. Bottle weights can change over time due to changes in packaging.

When an item is called up in the app, you’ll see a “Full weight” section, which shows the average full weight of the item. You can have more than one full weight on file for an item, since it’s unlikely that all bottles of that item weigh the exact same.

In the image below, it shows the average full weight of a Jameson 750ml bottle is 1281g. If you tap “Full weight”, you’ll see all the full weights assigned to the bottle.

If you have a full bottle of the item on hand, place it on the scale and compare it to the full weights on file. If there is a large variance, you can delete the inaccurate weights and add a new one.

To add a new full weight after scanning an item:

  1. Tap the full weight that displays beneath the item

An arrow points to the Full weight under the item image.
  2. Swipe the incorrect full weight to the left and tap "Delete"

An arrow gestures to swipe left on the "Full weights" screen and then an arrow points to the "Delete" button.
  3. Tap Add Weight (or the + symbol on the top right)

An arrow points to the "Add weight" button.
  4. Enter the empty weight in grams / kg / lbs or Oz and tap "Done"

The weight has been entered in grams and the "Done" button is highlighted for emphasis.
  5. The full weight is added. Tap the back arrow to return to the item

An arrow points to the back button.
  6. The new full weight displays under the item

The new empty weight displays under the item.

With the new full weight on file, weigh the partial item again, and see if the output matches the expected result.

Empty Weights

If there is an empty weight on file for the item, it ignores the density rating and calculates what is left based on the full and empty weights.

If the empty weight appears incorrect, you can remove it and add a new one. To learn more about adding and removing bottle weights, see here:

For more information on Empty Weights, see the Item Category / Liquid Density section below.

Item Category / Liquid Density

In most cases, WISK uses the full weight of an item and the density of the alcohol to calculate how much liquid remains.

The density of water (with a specific gravity of 1.0) is used to determine the density of other liquids.

You can see the specific gravity of each category on the WISK Web Portal by going to the Families & Categories section and clicking the details button beside a category.

For some types of alcohol (mainly liqueurs), the specific gravity can vary based on the product. In WISK, the default category of Liqueur and Cream is set to 1.06. However, something such as Cointreau has a specific gravity of 1.04, but Creme de Cassis is around 1.18.

This can lead to some cases where an item may be close to empty (1oz remaining) and WISK says there is nothing left. For more information, see here:

Typically, alcohol with a lot of sugar is heavier than water (liqueurs, creams), and spirits that contain no sugar (gin, whiskey, etc.) are lighter than water.

To get a more accurate measurement (particularly with items in the “Liqueur and Cream” category), you can add an empty weight to the item.

With a full and empty weight on file, it uses those values to calculate how much remains in the item. The density rating for the category as a whole is ignored.

If you have scanned an item that is almost empty, you can pour the contents out into another container, and record the empty weight of the item to get a more accurate measurement.

To add an empty weight after scanning an item:

  1. Tap "Empty Weights" under the item

An arrow points to "Empty weights" under the item image.
  2. Tap "Add weight"

An arrow points to the "Add weight" button.

  3. Select the unit of measurement and enter the empty weight of the item. Tap "Done"

The weight of the empty item has been entered and the "Done" button is highlighted for emphasis.

  4. The empty weight is added. Tap the back arrow to return to the item

An arrow points to the back button.

  5. The empty weight displays under the item and you can re-weigh the partial item

The empty weight now displays under the item image.

After going through all these steps, this should resolve the issue.

If it’s still not displaying the proper amount, please contact [email protected].
